“All differences in this world are of degree, and not of kind, because oneness is the secret of everything.”
Swami Vivekananda
The differences in people- their individuality has become tremendously important in popular culture. In this body of work I focus on our sameness: the fears, joys, and losses that occur in humanity, our commonality. It is a reflection on the experiences that women share. Every culture and time has gender roles, an aesthetic ideal, a popular perspective. These pieces are meant to create a context of togetherness and to help us realize that in our happiest moment and times of struggle we are not alone.
In my paintings I work predominantly with water based mediums including inks, acrylics, and water colors. I start each piece without “intention”. By working very wet I allow the characteristic properties of the mediums to create a variety of colors and shapes and leave them to dry. It is only then that I pull images out of the piece. Through quiet observation, the forms become apparent. I then begin to make them more distinct. I repeat many of these forms in my monoprints to create layers of color. In both styles of work I incorporate pen and ink work and handmade papers to add texture, color, and depth.
